NP says Air Canada hears fines are increasing

2026-05-04 06:31 ET - In the News

The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that the Liberal government is revamping the ineffective Trudeau-era air passenger rights rules. The Post's Rahim Mohamed writes that Transport Minister Steven Mackinnon announced plans to address an "unacceptable" backlog of nearly 100,000 passenger complaints at Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport. He said: "The regulations themselves are too complex. We need a practical regime that safeguards passengers' rights when travel does not go as planned." Mr. Mackinnon announced that the government would quadruple the maximum fine for airlines found to have repeatedly violated passenger rights, from $250,000 to $1-million. He added that the government will outsource passenger complaints to a private sector adjudicator. Mr. Mackinnon also announced the elimination of a federal gag order prohibiting travellers from publicly discussing their complaints. Mr. Mackinnon said COVID was partly to blame for the failure of Trudeau-era air passenger protections. He said, "We put in place a system that was, in hindsight, onerous, expensive and took too long. It must be said, and to be fair, the system was implemented during a pandemic, which certainly did not help."
