Globe says Air Canada flights to Asia seen as at risk

2026-04-09 08:01 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that consumers and businesses are likely to see imminent price cuts for gasoline after the United States and Iran reached a ceasefire deal this week, but other forms of cost relief could take weeks or months to materialize -- and all of it hinges on a lasting truce between the warring factions. The Globe's Mariya Postelnyak and Mark Rendell write that Canadian gas prices are expected to fall around 11 cents to an average of roughly $1.75 a litre by Friday. However, reopening refineries and oil rigs could take months or years, keeping pressure on energy supply chains. Aviation fuel supply has effectively stopped flowing to many regions after the last shipment from the Strait of Hormuz. John Gradek at McGill University predicted a wait of about seven weeks for any dips in the price of aviation fuel to translate into lower airfares. Easing fuel strain in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and other Asian countries that rely solely on imported jet fuel from the Middle East will take longer still. "If you have Canadians flying between Toronto or Vancouver and Bangkok or Manila on Air Canada, those flights are at risk," Mr. Gradek said. "There's no fuel available in those cities."
