Globe says Air Canada, rivals in fight on passenger law

2024-03-25 07:55 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, March 25, edition that Air Canada, Porter Airlines and other carriers are taking their fight against the country's passenger protection rules to the Supreme Court of Canada on Monday. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the country's top court will hear government and industry arguments for and against Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations, which went into effect in 2019 and outline how airlines are to treat customers whose flights are disrupted or whose luggage is lost. The rules of the Canadian Transportation Agency have been strengthened gradually over time, and they state that airlines are responsible for compensating passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled, depending on the causes and within certain time frames. Additionally, there are guidelines that specify that passengers who experience delays are entitled to food and lodging, as well as compensation for lost or damaged luggage. The airline industry lost its appeal of the rules before the Federal Court of Appeal in 2022, except for some luggage provisions. The Supreme Court of Canada agreed to hear the industry's appeal of that decision in a hearing scheduled for Monday in Ottawa.
