The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Dec. 3, edition that Hemlo Mining has ambitious plans for its Northern Ontario gold mine. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that Hemlo acquired the mine from Barrick Mining in September for up to $1.09-billion (U.S.). Jason Kosec, a structural geologist who was recruited to be Hemlo's first chief executive officer, said Barrick was not able to prioritize giving the mine the resources required to maximize production. "When you're Barrick and this is the lowest of the low-production profile in your portfolio, to fight over capital being allocated to Hemlo versus something like Fourmile, Hemlo was never going to get that money," Mr. Kosec said, referring to one of Barrick's other mines. "We saw that if we could put some money back into the mine we saw tremendous value." Barrick called the mine a "non-core" asset, while calling its Fourmile project in Nevada one of this century's significant gold discoveries. The mill at Hemlo is currently running at only 40-per-cent capacity, Mr. Kosec said, and hoisting capacity is at just 60 per cent. Fixing those two bottlenecks could increase production from an average of about 154,000 ounces of gold annually to about 200,000, he added.
