The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 5, edition that in early February, malicious software from Russia quietly infiltrated the internal systems of Indigo Books & Music. The Globe's Temur Durrani and Susan Krashinsky Robertson write that a coterie of hackers made themselves known to Indigo for the first time. Soon, an emergency response group tried to contain the complex threat along with the help of third party experts. By the time the hackers asked for a ransom that day -- Feb. 8 -- they had already engaged the notorious Russian malware dubbed LockBit to illegally access the company's multilayered network. The attack wreaked havoc on Indigo. To this day, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and even Indigo officials still do not know who exactly the hackers are. Over the past year, many high-profile organizations in Canada have been hit, including the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the Prime Minister's Office, Empire, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and others. In July, it was revealed that Barrick Gold, was struck by Russian cybercriminal group Clop. The attack also hit a vendor of Sun Life Financial, compromising confidential internal data.
