The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Google Maps now displays Lake Ontario as "Lake America." Guest columnist Vas Bednar writes that Google says that a user in the U.S. would see the entire feature labelled "Lake America," while a user in Canada would see it labelled "Lake Ontario," and users elsewhere see both names. Google hasn't divided the lake in a way that accurately reflects the tension at play. Rather, it has geofenced the whole of the lake based on the viewer's location. As a result, Google's decision is more consequential than the theatre of the name change. It's deliberate epistemic collapse. The line across the lake has really become a line drawn across the sand, revealing which companies are down to comply with a tyrannical clown; Apple announced it would change the name on its app, while MapQuest said it would not. No law requires any private company to follow the GNIS, including Google, which the European Commission hit with a 890-million-euro fine for breaching the Digital Markets Act in July. This whole mess is a good example of what scholars have been warning about for years: that U.S. tech companies are uniquely susceptible to U.S. government pressure and "digital imperialism."
