The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, June 20, edition that Intel surged Thursday after President Donald Trump said the chipmaker will work with Apple to design and produce semiconductors domestically. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Trump briefly mentioned a partnership after praising Nvidia and Elon Musk's Terafab chipmaking plans on Truth Social. Apple has been in talks with Intel and Samsung to produce its main processors in the U.S. Mr. Trump posted, "We need to design and build our Chips right here in America." For Intel, finding external customers for chip production is a key piece of a comeback plan under chief executive officer Lip-bu Tan. Intel is still in the early stages of securing clients for its chip foundry business. Landing Apple would be a major win for Mr. Tan and could attract more clients. Separately, Intel took steps to shore up its foundry business Thursday. The company hired chip industry veteran Seok-hee Lee as an executive vice-president of the foundry operation, where he will oversee advanced packaging. He will report directly to Mr. Tan, alongside current foundry executive vice-president Naga Chandrasekaran, who is focused on manufacturing technologies.
