The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Nvidia briefly hit a market capitalization of $4-trillion on Wednesday, becoming the first company to reach this milestone (all figures U.S.). The Globe's Shashwat Chauhan writes that its shares rose 2.8-per-cent to an all-time high of $164.42 due to increasing demand for artificial intelligence technologies. The stock ultimately closed up 1.8 per cent, valuing the company at $3.97-trillion, reflecting strong Wall Street confidence in AI's rapid growth, with Nvidia's chips at its core. Dakota Wealth manager Robert Pavlik says, "It highlights the fact that companies are shifting their asset spend in the direction of AI and it's pretty much the future of technology." The stock's recent rally comes after a slow start to the year, spurred by concerns over a Chinese AI model from DeepSeek that affected sector confidence. Nvidia reached a $1-trillion market value for the first time in June, 2023, and tripled it within a year, outpacing Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft is now the second-most valuable U.S. company, with a market cap of $3.74-trillion. Nvidia makes up 7.3 per cent of the S&P 500, while Apple and Microsoft account for about 7 per cent and 6 per cent.
