Post says Trump risks U.S. economy to get at Apple

2025-06-04 09:19 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that in another burst of dangerous economic ignorance that is fast diminishing the American economy, U.S. President Donald Trump has turned his attention to undermining what may be the greatest corporate success in global history. The Post's Terence Corcoran writes that Mr. Trump is threatening tariffs of "at least" 25 per cent on iPhones made outside the U.S. The iPhone is one of most transformative and successful products in economic history and his threats pose a risk to the American economy. Why would Mr. Trump want to punish an American corporate hero? One reason is his "America First" theory, the belief that products sold in America -- from cars to Barbie dolls to iPhones -- should be made in America. Another reason is the idea that production of iPhones and thousands of other goods has been unjustly stolen by the Communist Party dictatorship in China. A new book -- Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company -- makes the argument that the iPhone maker has essentially sold its productive soul to the authoritarian regime and is now so deeply beholden to the Communist Party that it is at risk. But without China there would be no iPhone and no Apple.
