The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, April 19, edition that Silicon Valley's tech giants often view antitrust scrutiny as just a cost of doing business, accepting investigations, filings and lawsuits. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that a recent ruling, however, has raised the stakes for Alphabet's Google, with a federal judge finding that the company illegally built a monopoly in its on-line advertising technology. This follows another ruling in August that determined Google engaged in anticompetitive behavior in on-line search. Experts noted that two significant antitrust victories against one company in such a short span is unprecedented. George Washington University law professor William Kovcic says: "Two courts have reached similar conclusions in product markets that go to the heart of Google's business. That has to be seen as a real threat." The Google decisions are part of ongoing antitrust cases against major tech companies. Last week, a trial began in an FTC suit against Meta for allegedly establishing an illegal social media monopoly through its purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp. The government has also sued Apple and Amazon for anti-competitive behavior.
