The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that concerns have arisen among educators that students may misuse artificial intelligence tools like Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT. The Globe's Dave McGinn writes that many teachers are unable to harness AI's potential due to a lack of supportive policies or knowledge. Jamie Mitchell and Tamara Phillips at the Halton District School Board are working to change this by training teachers on AI tools and encouraging experimentation. A recent KPMG survey revealed that 59 per cent of Canadian students use generative AI for school work, up from 52 per cent the previous year. Mr. Mitchell believes that while concerns about cheating exist, teachers should embrace this technology and explore how to incorporate it into their classrooms. He says, "A lot of kids are saying they want to learn how to use AI properly, and they want teachers to teach them that." In November, Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Phillips led two professional development days on using AI for 115 educators. They addressed concerns about cheating and introduced tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E, discussing bias and potential classroom applications. Many discovered that ChatGPT could serve as an effective tutor.
