The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Nov. 21, edition that industry experts emphasize the importance of understanding artificial intelligence as its technology matures, presenting both opportunities and risks. The Post's guest columnist Anthony Marcusa writes that this topic was central to the recent Hinton Lectures in Toronto, featuring Geoffrey Hinton, the "godfather of AI" and 2024 Nobel laureate in physics. He warned about the potential replacement of many jobs by AI, suggesting that while it is uncertain if this will lead to widespread joblessness, mundane intellectual tasks are likely to be automated.
Mr. Hinton said: "A lot of jobs are going to be replaced. We don't know at present whether it's going to lead to massive joblessness, but my guess is it probably will. Mundane intellectual labour is just going to be replaced by AI." How money is distributed in the event of a widespread loss of jobs and who harnesses new wealth and productivity are of particular importance because AI can lead to the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer, Mr. Hinton said. "If it does lead to massive job loss, we're going to need something like universal basic income," he said.
