The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 29, edition that Apple has released a free software update for its iOS 18 operating system, introducing artificial intelligence features to the iPhone 16 lineup. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the update follows the launch of four iPhone 16 models priced from $800 (U.S.) to $1,200 (U.S.), which require a special chip for AI capabilities. Last year's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will also support the technology after the update, and recent iPad and Mac versions can be updated as well. Countries outside the U.S. will not receive the AI software for their iPhones until next year, with the specific date yet to be determined. Over the past five weeks, Apple has been testing the AI software with a group of iPhone owners who volunteered to help the company refine the technology.
The integration of AI is expected to transform Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, into a more conversational, versatile and engaging companion. This enhanced experience will be indicated by a glowing light that circles the iPhone's screen while requests are being processed. The software update includes AI features for writing, proofreading, and summarizing e-mails and documents.
