The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that in the Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen on Tuesday, Huawei made another bid for the spotlight with the announcement of a new device just hours after Apple introduced its iPhone 16 in California. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe says that Huawei's latest phone, the Mate XT, is heavy on novelty: It can be folded, twice. The tablet-size device folds along two vertical seams to become the size of a typical phone. It is the first commercially available trifold smart phone. It comes in two colours, red and black, and will go on sale Sept. 20. Richard Yu, Huawei's consumer group chair, calls it a tablet in your pocket. Starting at $2,800 (U.S.), the Mate XT is priced like a luxury product. Since the Mate 60 Pro was launched last year, Huawei has been eating into Apple's years-long dominance of the market for high-end smart phones in China. While the trifold phone is making a splash, Huawei has not yet introduced its latest rival to the iPhone, the next-generation Mate 70. In recent years, Huawei has launched products in September, which is also when Apple typically unveils new iPhones. Apple's market share in China fell drastically during the first half of this year.
