The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Aug. 19, edition that as students head back to school, Big Tech may find itself back in the spotlight. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that last year, social media platforms like TikTok, Meta's Facebook and Instagram, and Snapchat were sued for allegedly disrupting education, contributing to a mental health crisis among young people and forcing teachers to deal with the consequences. This September, experts say the clash between tech and textbooks will reignite as schools and parents reckon with the impact of social media on education. The current challenges faced by the education system can be attributed to the widespread use of mobile devices. This has been further complicated by the development of advanced camera features, applications and social media platforms. Studies have linked more time on social media to lower self-esteem and academic performance as well as more exposure to hateful, violent and mature content. A 2018 study by the World Health Organization concluded 6.85 per cent of students were classified as having problematic social-media use, which is considered to be when behavioural and psychological symptoms of addiction to social media manifest.
