The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, May 31, edition that Nvidia's value has tripled in less than eight months, reflecting the surge in interest in artificial intelligence following rapid advances in generative AI. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Nvidia has gained about 240 per cent since October, far outpacing members of the broad-market S&P 500 index. Argus Research analyst Jim Kelleher says, "Technical traders and AI mania have pushed Nvidia toward the $1-trillion cap." Nvidia's share rally has propelled its valuation past its peers. Reuters says, however, that there are analysts that say the AI boom means the stock should still be worth more. Following Tuesday's close, only four other companies have a valuation in excess of $1-trillion -- Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon. CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino says, "We view Nvidia as the most important company on the planet in an era that is rapidly changing toward one that will be emphasized by greater AI capabilities." Despite the sky-high valuation, analysts believe Nvidia's AI chips business has room for growth as generative AI technology is still at a nascent stage with wide adoption expected in the years to come.
