LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- (Business Wire)

Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and the University of Louisville today announced the publication of a new economic impact report examining Humana’s contributions across the state. The analysis, authored by University of Louisville applied economist Thomas E. Lambert, PhD, found that Humana’s operations generated nearly $20 billion in economic activity across Kentucky in 2025, supporting jobs, businesses and communities throughout the Commonwealth.

The report, The Economic Impact of Humana and Humana Philanthropy on the Commonwealth of Kentucky for 2025, uses the IMPLAN economic modeling system and several years of company financial data to measure Humana’s employment, payroll, output, tax and philanthropic effects. The findings highlight how Humana’s long-standing commitment to Kentucky helps fuel significant economic opportunity and community investment today while creating a stronger foundation for Kentucky’s next chapter of growth, health and shared prosperity.

“At the University of Louisville, we are committed to producing rigorous, data-driven research that helps organizations and communities better understand their impact,” said Thomas E. Lambert, PhD, University of Louisville applied economist. “This analysis demonstrates that Humana's influence extends well beyond its own operations, supporting jobs, businesses, tax revenues, and community investment across Kentucky. As a Kentucky-headquartered company, Humana creates economic ripple effects that strengthen communities throughout the Commonwealth and underscore the value of locally rooted organizations."

Key findings from the report

  • Nearly $20 billion in statewide economic output. Humana generated approximately $6.4 billion in direct Kentucky output in 2025, with indirect and induced effects bringing the estimated total to $19.9 billion.
  • More than 51,000 Kentucky jobs supported. Approximately 9,000 Humana jobs statewide support about 42,000 additional jobs through supplier activity and employee spending.
  • $3.8 billion in total labor income. Humana’s approximately $952 million in direct Kentucky payroll generated an estimated $3.8 billion in total labor income across the Commonwealth.
  • $3.25 billion in estimated tax impact. Humana’s business activity and related economic effects generated an estimated $3.25 billion in local, state and federal taxes.
  • A significant Louisville-area impact. The report estimates Humana supports approximately 39,500 jobs, $2.6 billion in labor income and nearly $13 billion in total output in the Louisville metro area.
  • Long-term investment in Kentucky communities. From roughly 2017 through 2025, Humana, its employees and the Humana Foundation averaged approximately $51 million annually in financial and in-kind giving, supporting an estimated 403 jobs and $83.3 million in total output each year.

The report also examines Humana’s role as a trusted health care partner in Kentucky, where 840,000 Kentucky members are served across Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and other health plans. It specifically notes that Humana Healthy Horizons serves more than 191,000 Kentucky Medicaid members, and over 78,000 patients are cared for across CenterWell's Senior Primary Care, Home Health and Pharmacy services. These insights reinforce how Kentucky-headquartered managed care can help keep healthcare dollars circulating in the state through local employment, spending with Kentucky businesses and additional tax generation. The analysis also highlights Humana’s long-term investment in care access, provider partnerships, workforce development, behavioral health, maternal health, food security and other health-related social needs across the Commonwealth.

“As a company founded and headquartered in Kentucky, Humana understands that our impact is measured not only by the people we serve, but also by the jobs, partnerships and investment we sustain across the Commonwealth,” said Jeb Duke, Senior Vice President and Medicaid Divisional Leader at Humana. “By working alongside providers, community organizations and state leaders, we can improve access to care, strengthen local communities and help keep healthcare resources in Kentucky—creating value for the state today and building a healthier future for generations to come.”

The independently developed report highlights Humana's role as a major Kentucky employer, health partner and community investor. The findings show how the company's business activity, workforce, philanthropy and partnerships contribute to growing economic activity and community well-being across the Commonwealth.
