Rail Safety Week 2026: CPKC encourages safe behaviour at crossings and around tracks

CALGARY, AB, Sept. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) is reminding pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, municipalities and communities to make rail safety a priority during Rail Safety Week in Canada and Mexico and See Tracks? Think Train® Week in the U.S. taking place Sept. 21-27, 2026.

Every year, approximately 2,300 people across North America are seriously injured or killed because of unsafe behaviour around the railway.

CPKC supports Operation Lifesaver's annual campaign that reminds people to stay alert, follow warning signs and signals and make safe choices near railroad tracks and crossings.

With more than 20,000 miles of track across Canada, the United States and Mexico, CPKC reminds the public to follow these railway safety tips:

• Stay off railway property. Trespassing is illegal and dangerous.
• Never walk, cycle or ride on or near railway tracks.
• Never use railway tracks or railroad property as an ATV path.
• Never take photos or videos on or near railroad tracks.
• Cross only at designated and marked railway crossings.
• Watch for warning signals, including flashing lights, bells and gates.
• Look both ways before crossing railway tracks.
• Wait for trains to pass completely before crossing. If lights are flashing or gates are down, do not cross.
• If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out immediately and move a safe distance away. Call the emergency number posted at the crossing or call 911.
• In a rail emergency, call CPKC Police at 1-800-716-9132.
