Globe says Thomson Reuters sticks with organic growth

2014-10-31 08:36 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition Thomson Reuters has no plans to start making large acquisitions again, even though its business has stabilized and is starting to showing improvement. The Globe's Richard Blackwell quotes chief executive officer Jim Smith as saying Thursday the news and information company is "very comfortable" with its current plans to grow organically, and "we don't believe that requires stepping back into the M&A game at the level we were at historically. ... We don't think we need to go out and acquire new fields in which to play." Thomson Reuters's third quarter revenue rose about 1 per cent to $3.1-billion, matching analysts' expectations (all figures U.S.). Profit was $250-million, or 29 cents a share, down from $283-million, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier. The decline was mainly attributed to tax expenses and currency fluctuations. While revenue in the financial and risk business fell 2 per cent, the company pointed out that net sales were up in all regions, the first time this has happened since the Reuters acquisition. RBC analyst Drew McReynolds said he sees a "leg up" for the stock, thanks to cost savings and an "eventual uptick in organic revenue growth."
