Stock Pickers Digest, in the July, 2016, issue, refreshes its buy of Sherritt International Corp., recently 75 cents. Stock Pickers said buy seven times from June, 2001, to March, 2005, at prices ranging from $4.30 to $10.13. It said sell in March, 2006, at $9.95. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each buy, selling the $7,000 position at $9.95 would have yielded a profit of $6,077. Stock Pickers said buy nine more times from February, 2011, to February, 2016, at prices ranging from 65 cents to $8.76. A $1,000 investment for each of the nine new buys is now worth $2,710. Sherritt is seeking three-year extensions on $720-million worth of its debt, comprising bonds due in 2018, 2020 and 2022. In exchange for the extensions, Sherritt will give its bondholders a cash payment equal to 2 per cent of the principal amount of their bonds. Alternatively, the bondholders can accept an offer to buy shares of Sherritt at just 74 cents over the next five years. Although these moves will have little effect on Sherritt's total debt of $2.1-billion (equal to 9.7 times market cap), they will allow the company to retain more of its cash as it waits for commodity prices to rebound.
