FP/wire say Imperial parent Exxon supports carbon tax

2015-05-28 07:59 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Imperial Oil parent Exxon Mobil will not join a group of its European Big Oil peers which are forging a unified approach to climate change because the company has already made its views clear, chief executive officer Rex Tillerson said Wednesday. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Tillerson said Exxon has been consistent in its positions on the impact of rising temperatures and does not need to be part of a group. Royal Dutch Shell and BP are among the European companies working together on a climate strategy in advance of United Nations' climate talks set to conclude in Paris this December. Mr. Tillerson reiterated Exxon's position supporting a carbon tax if a consensus emerges in the U.S. for climate action and said Exxon is wary of making efforts to reduce emissions that may not work or will be deemed unnecessary if current models prove to be inaccurate. His comments came after a shareholder at Exxon's annual general meeting Wednesday praised the European companies for at least paying "lip service" to environmental concerns. Some shareholders at the AGM criticized Exxon for failing to react more aggressively to rising temperatures.
