The Successful Investor, in its February, 2016, issue, says hold BlackBerry Ltd., recently $10. The Investor said buy in March, 2011, at $63, and again in November, 2011, at $24. Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the two buys, the $2,000 position would now be worth $560. The smart phone maker recently paid $250-million (U.S.) for AtHoc, whose software lets users securely exchange messages in times of crisis. AtHoc's clients include the U.S. defence and homeland security departments. BlackBerry also purchased Good Technology, whose software improves mobile message security, for $425-million (U.S.). In the fiscal 2016 third quarter ended Nov. 28, 2015, BlackBerry's revenues decreased to $548-million (U.S.) from $793-million (U.S.) a year earlier. The company lost three U.S. cents a share, compared with a profit of one U.S. cent last year. BlackBerry had $2.65-billion (U.S.) in cash at Nov. 28, 2015, and its long-term debt of $1.3-billion (U.S.) is a manageable 35 per cent of its market cap. It recently launched its Priv smart phone, which runs on Google's Android software. The stock is still a hold, but only for highly aggressive investors.
