Inv Reporter refreshes Gildan Activewear buy

2015-02-27 20:49 ET - In the News

The Investment Reporter, in its Feb. 20, 2015, issue, refreshes its buy of Gildan Activewear Inc., recently $72.80. The Reporter said buy nine times from Oct. 4, 2000, to Nov. 7, 2014, at prices ranging from $18.02 to $65.21 (the stock split 2 for 1 on May 18, 2005, and again on May 16, 2007). Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the nine buys, the $9,000 position would now be worth $31,158. The apparel maker lost 31 U.S. cents a share in the first quarter of fiscal 2015 ended Jan. 4, 2015. Even so, it is expected to earn $3.08 (U.S.) a share in fiscal 2015 and $3.72 (U.S.) a share in fiscal 2016. Gildan is acquiring Comfort Colors for $100-million (U.S.). Comfort Colors buys clothes from companies (including Gildan), dyes them and sells them in specialty retail stores. It has dyeing, packaging and distribution operations in Vermont and Massachusetts. After integration, Gildan expects this acquisition to add 20 cents a share to its earnings. On March 27, Gildan will pay a stock dividend that will have the same effect as a 2:1 stock split. It pays a regular dividend of 52 U.S. cents a share, which is a 0.9-per-cent yield. The stock remains a buy for long-term gains and small but rising dividends.
