FP says Chile wants Barrick project, but not that badly

2015-03-03 07:12 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition copper prices are down significantly in the last six months, from about $3.20 a pound to the current level of $2.68, but Chile's Mining Minister, Aurora Williams, is not worried (all figures U.S.). The Post's Peter Koven writes Ms. Williams told the Post Chile expects $104-billion of mining investment by 2020. She noted the major producers are thinking long term and are not slowing down spending because of the price declines. Chile also has a program that sets "sustainable" prices for small producers that helps keep them in business during the tough times. The weaker Chilean peso is also helping. Codelco, the giant state-owned copper miner, is also growing at a feverish pace. It may spend up to $5-billion this year, Ms. Williams said, setting a positive tone for the broader market. For Canadian investors, the project of most interest in Chile is Pascua-Lama, which was suspended by regulators in 2013 after Barrick Gold botched construction in spectacular fashion. Barrick has talked about resuming work when gold prices improve. Ms. Williams did not address the project's future directly in her comments, except to say, "We require sustainable and inclusive mining."
