The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he is pausing efforts to guide stranded vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz to allow time for a potential deal to end the Iran war, while maintaining the blockade of Iranian ports. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trump shared this decision in a social media post, indicating the pause will be short to explore a possible agreement with Tehran.
Mr. Trump said the decision was based on requests from Pakistan and other countries, military successes in the campaign against Iran and significant progress toward a final agreement with Iran's representatives.
The talks have largely stalled though a ceasefire that took hold nearly a month ago is holding.
The United Arab Emirates reported a second day of attacks from Iranian drones and missiles, despite U.S. military leaders and Secretary of State Marco Rubio claiming the ceasefire is holding and that the initial major U.S. military operation against Iran has concluded.
Before Mr. Trump's announcement, Mr. Rubio said that for peace to be achieved, Iran must agree to the President's demands on its nuclear program and also agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
