The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Silicon Valley is finding all that bootlicking for President Donald Trump is getting them nowhere. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that after donating heavily to his campaign and inauguration earlier this month, a who's who of the industry gathered at the White House to pay tribute to the Dear Leader. The coterie of tech titans shamelessly showered him with praise. "Thank you for being such a pro-business, pro-innovation President," said OpenAI boss Sam Altman at the dinner on Sept. 4. "It's a very refreshing change." Apple's Tim Cook gifted a gold bar. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates uttered nice words and glanced tenderly at the President. All that sucking up may have been for naught. Big Tech companies were later blindsided by Mr. Trump's recent changes to the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers. They include a new $100,000 (U.S.) price tag for each new application, as of Sunday. A court in Virginia is pondering a case brought by the feds over whether Google should be broken up because of its advertising monopoly. Then on Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission secured a $2.5-billion (U.S.) settlement against Amazon over "deceptive" marketing methods.
