Globe/AP say Tesla found liable in autopilot crash

2025-08-05 07:15 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that a Miami jury found Tesla partly responsible for a deadly 2019 crash involving its Autopilot technology, ordering the company to pay over $200-million (U.S.) in punitive damages. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the jury determined that Tesla's technology failed and that responsibility could not be solely placed on the reckless driver, who admitted to being distracted by his cellphone. This ruling concludes a four-year case that is notable for reaching trial. The case involved claims by the family of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon and her injured boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, that Tesla hid or lost key evidence. The plaintiffs proved Tesla had the evidence all along, despite its denials. Tesla later admitted it made a mistake and had not realized the evidence was there. Tesla's lawyers said the plaintiffs concocted a story "blaming the car when the driver -- from day one -- admitted and accepted responsibility." The lawyers said Tesla plans to appeal. Plaintiffs' lead lawyer Brett Schreiber acknowledged that driver George McGee was negligent for speeding through flashing lights and a stop sign before crashing into a parked Chevrolet Tahoe.
