The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Aug. 4, edition that Hilary Weston, the Irish-Canadian businesswoman, philanthropist and former lieutenant-governor of Ontario, has died at 83, as confirmed by her family. The Globe's Kristy Kirkup and Andrea Woo write that Ms. Weston's son, Galen Weston Jr., described her as dedicated to her family and community service. Before her public office, she was deputy chair of Holt Renfrew from 1986 to 1996 and was involved in the W. Garfield Weston Foundation's charitable activities. The Westons are one of the wealthiest and most prominent families in the country, best known for their connection to the Loblaw grocery chain.
Ms. Weston's late husband, W. Galen Weston, known as Galen Weston Sr., died in 2021 at the age of 80. The couple was married for 55 years. As Ontario's lieutenant-governor from 1997 to 2002, Ms. Weston focused on issues related to youth, women and volunteerism.
In 2003, she was awarded the Order of Canada, which is given to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the country. Rideau Hall stated that Ms. Weston served with distinction, noting she was only the second woman appointed as Ontario's lieutenant-governor.
