Globe says Suncor, rivals wary of incurring more costs

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that a pipeline to the West Coast is contingent on energy companies advancing the Pathways carbon capture and storage project. A tripe bylined item led by Jeffrey Jones reports, however, that the Oil Sands Alliance, which has been planning Pathways, is hesitant to incur additional costs that their global rivals do not face. Pathways president Kendall Dilling said: "Without the conditions for growth, building a pipeline or doing Pathways is pointless. Once we achieve that, we can assess if this work will support our hoped-for growth." Cenovus chief executive officer Jon McKenzie said last week that carbon pricing is just one burden on the industry. When added to the effects of other federal policies it presents "an incredibly complicated policy framework that makes investments in Canada difficult and non-competitive with other countries, like the U.S. and countries in Asia," he said. The Globe says the last November's memorandum of understanding's success hinges on all sides agreeing to an economic structure fraught with risks. Former TC Energy executive Dennis McConaghy believes the governments are underestimating the operating costs for Pathways as well as the capital needed to expand oil sands production.
