The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Bank of Montreal and Toronto-Dominion Bank have blocked third party artificial-intelligence agents from accessing their digital properties, the latest in a string of banks that have restricted the technology. The Globe's Stefanie Marotta writes that Royal Bank of Canada said Tuesday it would block third party personal AI agents from directly accessing its digital properties, after similar moves by U.S. lenders. Customers can authorize AI agents -- semi-autonomous AI entities that carry out instructions from humans, such as Meta's popular AI agent Muse -- to access their bank accounts, transaction history and data to analyze spending patterns, and make recommendations. BMO made the decision last week to bar the technology in order to safeguard clients, BMO said in a statement. TD Bank said it has blocked all third party personal AI agents from direct access to banking information where authentication is required while it ensures the appropriate safeguards are in place. National Bank said in a statement it is closely monitoring the developments, including the use of Meta Platform's Muse, and assessing the opportunities and risks the technology may pose to clients.
