Globe/wire say TSX loses 268 points ahead of midterms

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Canada's main stock index fell to a nearly four-week low on Tuesday as shares of Shopify and Thomson Reuters lost ground after posting quarterly results. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says the S&P 500 ended higher as AI heavyweights edged up ahead of U.S. midterm election results. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended down 268.81 points at 35,532.28. President Donald Trump said the United States was close to making a trade deal with Canada. The imposition of tariffs on Canada has emerged as an issue in some northern U.S. border states such as Michigan and Maine before the midterm elections on Tuesday. The Toronto Stock Exchange's technology sector fell 1.7 per cent on Tuesday, with shares of Shopify down 8 per cent after the e-commerce company's third-quarter revenue slightly missed estimates. Thomson Reuters reported higher third-quarter revenue, but its shares fell 9 per cent on what some investors said were concerns over the impact on profit of higher artificial-intelligence spending. The materials group lost 1.5 per cent as a stronger U.S. dollar hit gold prices, and higher West Texas Intermediate crude fell 37 U.S. cents to settle at $96.09 (U.S.).
