Globe/wire say TSX ends week mostly flat

2026-09-21 08:50 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that stocks closed a volatile week on a muted note on Friday as benchmark U.S. Treasury yields topped 5 per cent, while crude prices remained above $100 (U.S.) a barrel, keeping inflation worries front and centre. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says a semiconductor rally boosted Nasdaq and the S&P 500. S&P/TSX Composite Index ended down 69.58 points at 35,804.86. For the week, the index was up 0.3 per cent, after four straight weekly declines. Last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will let businesses immediately write off the cost of most new capital investments for tax purposes. "Despite the lofty investment goals, markets were grounded by the mundane reality that the Bank of Canada may also have its tightening hand forced by persistently strong energy prices -- although trade friction and uncertainty offer a strong counterpoint for now," said Douglas Porter, chief economist at BMO Capital Markets. Investors see a 65-per-cent chance the Bank of Canada will raise interest rates next month. Shares of Thomson Reuters lost 5 per cent after OpenAI released a legal industry-focused version of its latest artificial-intelligence technology.
