Globe/wire say TSX ends higher as Fed mulls rate hike

2026-09-14 08:06 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Wall Street ended higher on Friday as oil prices retreated and strong consumer-price data reinforced expectations the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this week to fight inflation. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says Toronto was also higher, although a pullback in crude-oil prices translated into underperformance against major U.S. indexes. U.S. consumer prices accelerated last month as the cost of gasoline moved higher after two straight monthly declines, adding pressure on the Fed to tighten monetary policy. Interest-rate futures now reflect a nearly 90-per-cent probability that the central bank will raise rates at its policy meeting on Wednesday. That is up from a 72 per cent likelihood on Thursday. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 191.21 points at 35,697.49, after hitting its lowest closing level in nearly six weeks Thursday. For the week, the index was down 2.2 per cent, its fourth straight weekly decline and the steepest since March. Toronto's tech sector rose 3.6 per cent, with shares of electronic-equipment company Celestica gaining 6.6 per cent. Heavily weighted financials ended 0.6 per cent higher, while materials were up 1.1 per cent.
