Globe/wire say TSX edges up to new high

2026-08-11 09:25 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Canada's main stock index rose to another record high on Monday as energy stocks jumped, but the move was limited as Barrick Mining missed quarterly profit estimates. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says U.S. indexes ended lower as traders awaited key U.S. inflation data this week. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 77.10 points at 36,458.33, eclipsing Friday's record closing high. Energy gained 3.7 per cent as the price of oil settled 5.05 per cent higher at $82.13 (U.S.) a barrel after Iran and the United States traded demands for compensation, dimming prospects for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Technology was another standout on the Toronto Stock Exchange, adding 1.1 per cent. Barrick Mining reported second-quarter profit below estimates as higher costs at its gold operations offset rising bullion prices, and struck a $1.95-billion (U.S.) deal with Newmont to settle disputes over Nevada Gold Mines. Shares of Barrick were down 6.4 per cent, while the materials group, which includes metal mining shares, ended nearly unchanged. The price of gold rose 1.1 per cent as bullish momentum and fear of missing out propelled prices forward.
