Globe/wire say tech shares help TSX hit record high

2026-07-28 09:23 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Canada's main stock index rose to a record high on Monday, led by technology shares, as the potential for a strong corporate earnings season offset recent geopolitical uncertainty. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says Wall Street closed mixed. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 199.04 points at 35,568.14, moving past the record closing high it posted last Wednesday. Celestica, Agnico Eagle Mines, Magna and Enbridge are among the big Canadian companies set to report earnings this week. The technology sector climbed 6.9 per cent, with shares of e-commerce company Shopify up 11.6 per cent. Consumer discretionary added 2.2 per cent and heavily weighted financials ended 0.6 per cent higher. The price of gold was up 0.7 per cent as a pullback in oil prices eased concerns about the inflation outlook and the prospect of higher U.S. interest rates. U.S. President Donald Trump said that the United States was having "good talks" with Iran (something Iran denies) and there was a chance of a deal over their conflict, but warned U.S. strikes would resume if the negotiations failed to deliver. U.S. crude oil futures settled 7.5 per cent lower at $82.61 (U.S.) a barrel.
