Globe/wire say profit-taking at banks hits TSX

2026-07-21 09:13 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Wall Street and the Toronto Stock Exchange finished lower on Monday while investors looked for moves toward Middle East de-escalation and waited for earnings results from major technology companies. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says financial and industrial stocks led the Canadian index lower. Nasdaq fell less than the S&P 500 and the Dow as the chip sector recovered some of the prior week's losses and growth sectors such as communications services and technology gained some ground along with the energy stocks. The second-quarter financial reporting will pick up the pace this week, with results due from big names like Alphabet, Tesla and Intel. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended down 303.53 points at 34,960.32, marking its third straight day of losses since notching a record closing high last Wednesday. Heavily weighted financials were among the biggest decliners, falling 1.9 per cent, with shares of National Bank of Canada down 2.7 per cent. The sector has seen sharp gains in recent months that has left valuations near historical highs and stocks vulnerable to profit-taking. Energy got a boost as the oil price increased to $83.23 (U.S.) a barrel.
