The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Dec. 9, edition that Toronto's S&P/TSX Composite Index closed down 141.44 points, or 0.45 per cent, at 31,169.97. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the benchmark index posted a fresh record high on Thursday but ended the week lower. The TSX is up more than 25 per cent for the year and looks to post its best year since 2009. Markets anticipate the Bank of Canada will keep rates steady at its upcoming December meeting due to stronger-than-expected jobs data, following a one-percentage-point reduction since the start of the year. The TSX materials group, which includes metal mining shares, fell 1.5 per cent, tracking metal prices. The communication services index declined 1.2 per cent with Rogers Communications and BCE dropping 1.4 per cent and 0.6 per cent. On the flip side, technology stocks gained 0.7 per cent. Heavyweight data-centre infrastructure provider Celestica added 5.1 per cent, while cybersecurity company BlackBerry rose 2.3 per cent. Transcontinental shares jumped 19 per cent after agreeing to sell its packaging unit to ProAmpac Holdings, valuing it at $2.22-billion, including debt.
