The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Canadian stocks closed higher on Monday. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 443.70 points or 1.47 per cent at 30,604.35. The materials group, which includes metal mining shares, rose 5.1 per cent as the price of gold climbed. Barrick Mining said it had reached an agreement with Mali's government to resolve all their disputes over the Loulo-Gounkoto gold mining complex after two years. Its shares climbed 8.5 per cent to eclipse its record high from December, 2010. Technology advanced 5.5 per cent, with shares of electronics equipment company Celestica up nearly 15 per cent. Heavily weighted financials added 0.5 per cent and energy was up 0.2 per cent. The price of oil settled 1.3 per cent higher at $58.84 (U.S.) a barrel amid mounting doubts about whether Russia will get a peace deal with Ukraine that will boost Moscow's oil exports. Among the TSX sectors that lost ground was consumer staples, which fell 1.6 per cent. Deutsche Bank helped revive investor risk appetite after projecting the S&P 500 would reach 8,000 by the end of next year, the most bullish forecast among major global brokerages.
