Globe/wire say TSX stocks closed sharply higher Friday

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Nov. 22, edition that Canadian stocks closed sharply higher on Friday. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 254.10 points, or 0.9 per cent, at 30,160.65. For the week, the index was down 0.5 per cent. The technology sector rose 1.3 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with e-commerce company Shopify adding 2.1 per cent. The materials group, which includes metal mining shares, added 1.1 per cent as copper prices rose. U.S. gold futures fell 0.05 per cent to $4,054.30 (U.S.) an ounce. Financials were up 1.3 per cent and consumer discretionary added 2.4 per cent. Shares of auto parts supplier Magna International climbed 5.6 per cent. China's Guangzhou Automobile Group will build its electric AION V model at a Magna facility in Austria, the two companies said on Thursday. Energy was the only one of 10 TSX major sectors to end lower. It fell 0.8 per cent as the price of oil settled 1.6 per cent lower at $58.06 (U.S.) a barrel.
