West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery lost $2.20 to $92.41, while Brent for November lost $2.28 to $104.32 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $22.80 to WTI, up from a discount of $26.70. Natural gas for October lost 10 cents to $3.19 (but still notched its largest weekly gain in nearly seven months -- winter is coming). The TSX energy index lost 3.61 points to close at 439.69.

Oil prices had a mixed week, with Brent posting a small weekly gain (0.4 per cent) and WTI a steeper weekly loss (3.8 per cent). The deepening WTI discount to Brent comes as Washington ponders a short-term ban on diesel exports. If diesel becomes stranded in the domestic market, U.S. refiners could redirect some oversupply into storage -- filling Gulf Coast inventories in just over a month -- but would eventually have to cut their crude runs by more than two million barrels a day, or 12 per cent, estimated Wood Mackenize. The proposal could nonetheless have political appeal as the Trump administration faces pressure to reduce record-high diesel prices ahead of the November midterms.
