West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery (new front month) added $1.64 to $92.16, while Brent for November added $3.83 to $103.08 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $26.60 to WTI, up from a discount of $27.30. Natural gas for October added five cents to $3.02. The TSX energy index added 2.01 points to close at 438.85.
Oil prices snapped a five-day losing streak as Iran's president, in a defiant speech to the UN General Assembly, said Iranians will fight "until our last breath" rather than surrender to the United States. He said Tehran is "ready for dialogue" but will not be bullied. Meanwhile, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. commercial crude inventories surged by three million barrels last week, countering analysts' predictions of a decrease of 500,000 barrels. (Those figures exclude the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which fell by 405,000 barrels last week -- its 26th straight weekly drawdown -- and now sits at its lowest level since 1982.)
