West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery added $1.34 to $101.39, while Brent for November added $1.07 to $105.68 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $23.80 to WTI, down from a discount of $19.70. Natural gas for October added six cents to $2.89. The TSX energy index added 3.07 points to close at 452.74.

Oil prices jumped to a four-month high in early trading, following a weekend Houthi attack that forced a shutdown of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, a crucial bypass route for regional oil exports while the Strait of Hormuz remains in a chokehold. The kingdom could run out of oil exports within days if it cannot restart the pipeline, traders told Reuters. Oil prices retreated over the rest of the session (but remained in triple digits) on reports that Saudi Arabia could cushion the blow by drawing on inventories in Egypt, as well as U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that Ukraine and Russia will no longer target each other's energy facilities.
