West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery added 44 cents to $84.94, while Brent for October added 15 cents to $91.02 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $18.30 to WTI, down from a discount of $17.80. Natural gas for September added eight cents to $2.77. The TSX energy index added 5.08 points to close at 446.23.

Exactly one month remains for Canadians to comment on Ottawa's consideration of a national-interest designation for the proposed West Coast oil pipeline. One prominent industry lobby group has (unsurprisingly) voiced its support. In a letter dated Aug. 14, the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada (EPAC) said the pipeline -- which would carry one million barrels a day of Alberta oil to a new deepwater B.C. export terminal -- will "strengthen Canada's autonomy, have a high likelihood of successful execution, advance the interests of indigenous peoples and contribute to clean growth." It therefore clearly "meets the definition of a project of national interest."
