West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery lost $2.02 to $81.25, while Brent for October lost $1.91 to $87.07 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.70 to WTI, up from a discount of $17.50. Natural gas for September lost seven cents to $2.72. The TSX energy index added 3.49 points to close at 430.25.
Jeff Tonken's Alberta Montney gas producer, Birchcliff Energy Ltd. (BIR), edged up nine cents to $6.47 on 2.89 million shares, after releasing its second quarter financials and updating its guidance. The financials were largely in line with analysts' predictions, with production of 77,600 barrels a day and cash flow of 34 cents a share. Production was down from 81,700 barrels a day in the first quarter because of a month-long turnaround at the Pouce Coupe gas plant. With the turnaround finished and new wells on stream, current production is 87,500 barrels a day, a rate Birchcliff did not expect to reach until the fourth quarter. It is thus tightening its full-year guidance to 83,000 to 84,000 barrels a day from the prior range of 81,000 to 84,000.
