West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery added $3.95 to $82.13, while Brent for October added $4.17 to $87.72 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $20.10 to WTI, down from a discount of $17.10. Natural gas for September added 13 cents to $2.79. The TSX energy index added 15.04 points to close at 422.06.

Oil prices headed higher as hopes faded for a quick reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran said the United States must meet additional conditions for a deal, including sanctions relief and compensation for war damage. U.S. President Donald Trump retorted that Iran should be the one paying reparations, saying his negotiators must "put this firmly into any, and all, future negotiations." TSX energy stocks went along for the ride, with noteworthy gainers including Strathcona Resources Ltd. (SCR: $42.04), Ovintiv Inc. (OVV: $88.54) and Spartan Delta Corp. (SDE: $12.03).
