West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery lost 40 cents to $63.96 on the New York Merc, while Brent for April lost 24 cents to $68.80 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.30 to WTI, up from a discount of $16.30. Natural gas for March lost two cents to $3.11. The TSX energy index lost a fraction of a point to close at 345.32.
Energy royalty firm PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. (PSK) lost 83 cents to $29.48 on 1.12 million shares, after releasing its year-end financials. (While not a direct oil and gas producer, PrairieSky collects royalties from producers across Western Canada, providing a useful barometer of industry activity.) Fourth quarter royalty production of 26,000 barrels a day and cash flow of 35 cents a share were a tad below analysts' predictions of 26,200 barrels a day and 36 cents a share. A dividend hike helped take the sting out of the below-forecast numbers, with PrairieSky nudging its quarterly payout up to 26.5 cents from 26 cents, for a new yield of 3.6 per cent.
