West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery added $1.65 to $61.15 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March added $1.60 to $65.47 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $16.20 to WTI, down from a discount of $14.50. Natural gas for February added one cent to $3.41. The TSX energy index added 7.82 points to close at 308.62.

Scott Ratushny's Cardinal Energy Ltd. (CJ) winged up 24 cents to $8.81 on 1.55 million shares, as it both exceeded and abandoned production targets. The exceeded target was at its new Reford thermal project. Cardinal originally expected Reford to reach nameplate capacity of 6,000 barrels a day by the end of March, but today it toasted the project for not only reaching this capacity two months ahead of schedule, but soaring onward to 6,500 barrels a day. The better-than-bull's-eye result helped offset the news that Cardinal is temporarily abandoning its practice of releasing annual guidance, at least for 2026, until it has "more clarity on where crude oil prices are headed."
