West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery added 51 cents to $56.66 on the New York Merc, while Brent for February added 65 cents to $60.47 (all figures in this para U.S.). Despite today's gains, both benchmarks notched their second weekly drop in a row. Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.40 to WTI, up from a discount of $13.50. Natural gas for January added seven cents to $3.98. The TSX energy index added 2.90 points to close at 290.79.

Canadian pipeline giant Enbridge Inc. (ENB) had some jolly news to end the week, scoring a victory in a five-year legal battle over its cross-border Line 5 pipeline. Back in 2020, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer -- whose state gets about half of its heating needs supplied by Line 5, to say nothing of the needs of Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Quebec -- ordered a shutdown of Line 5, claiming to be worried about a spill into the Great Lakes. Enbridge disputed the order on the basis that pipeline safety is a federal matter. Now a U.S. federal judge has sided with Enbridge, ruling that Michigan has no authority to intervene. (Happily for locals who would have otherwise faced some long, cold winters, Line 5 has continued operating throughout the dispute, and will presumably continue to do so even if the governor's office makes good on its threat to appeal.)
