West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery added 72 cents to $59.67 on the New York Merc, while Brent for February added 59 cents to $63.26 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $14.00 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.30. Natural gas for January added six cents to $5.06. The TSX energy index added a fraction of a point to close at 313.12.

Adam Waterous's heavy-oil-focused Strathcona Resources Ltd. (SCR) added 62 cents to $43.49 on 130,100 shares, as its largest shareholder announced another pass-through transaction, thereby loosening its (still tight) float. The Waterous Energy Fund (WEF) said yesterday afternoon that it has distributed 9.5 million shares of Strathcona to limited partners. This follows earlier pass-through dispositions of 24 million shares last January and another 11.2 million shares last month, leaving WEF with current holdings of 149 million shares or 69.9 per cent, down from 90.8 per cent this time last year. WEF added that it expects to shed another 3-per-cent interest in the new year.
