U.S. markets were closed today for the Juneteenth holiday. West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery added 66 cents to $75.80 in electronic trading on the New York Merc, while Brent for August added $2.15 to $78.85 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $14.30 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.70. Natural gas for July added nine cents to $4.08. The TSX energy index added 1.82 points to close at 282.40.

The "One Canadian Economy" Act -- or Bill C-5, the controversial legislation that would reduce internal trade barriers and allow for faster federal approvals of major infrastructure projects -- cleared a parliamentary committee in the wee hours of the morning. The government is racing to get the bill through the House by tomorrow night and all the way to the finish line by Canada Day. While the bill enjoys broad support from the business community, its speed and far-reaching contents are drawing criticism from opponents who say it runs roughshod over environmental protections and indigenous rights. One critic, Chief Lance Haymond of the Kebaowek First Nation, warned the committee darkly that the bill will spawn "Idle No More 2.0."
